Distinguished and Famous people from Alexandrina
Strathalbyn contributes several substantial historical connections to the Alexandrina district. These lives link the town with nineteenth-century settlement, medicine, scientific institutions and political reform.
๐งญ Dr John Rankine
Dr John Rankine arrived in South Australia from Scotland in 1839 with his brothers and other emigrants. The family settled around what became Strathalbyn, helping establish the community whose colonial buildings remain a feature of the town. Rankine later bought land on Hindmarsh Island, stocked it with cattle and built a substantial house there. He retired from active work in 1855 and returned to Scotland, where he died in 1864. His district connections thus extend beyond a single town centre.
๐ฌ Sir Edward Charles Stirling
Edward Charles Stirling was born at The Lodge in Strathalbyn in 1848. After medical and scientific training in England, he helped establish the University of Adelaide's medical school and became its first professor of physiology. He also directed the South Australian Museum and took part in scientific expeditions. As a parliamentarian he proposed a women's suffrage motion in 1885. His career was unusually broad: medicine, museum collections and voting rights all made demands on the same working life.
